BC High Opens Catholic Conference Showcase with 4-2 Win Over Malden Catholic

Canton, MA – The BC High School Eagles hosted the Malden Catholic Lancers in the first game of the Catholic Conference Showcase tripleheader today. The venue was the Canton Ice House and the Eagles came away victorious with a 4-2 victory over the Lancers.

Malden Catholic goalie Ethan Addazio stole the show in the first period. The sophomore goaltender was on his game and the reason his team was only down by a goal after the period concluded. From puck drop, BC High dominated territorially and held MC to only a couple of shots on net. The Eagles did an effective job of getting pucks behind the Lancers defense and going to work. They won almost every 50/50 puck battle and played most of the period in MC’s zone. Around the 12-minute mark, BC High got a shot from the point through and it was tipped in the slot but Addazio adjusted and squared up to the tip making a great save. The rebound ended up right back in the slot and he got his pad down fast and sealed the ice making the second save and getting a whistle. Just two minutes later, Addazio made a right pad save from a shot at the faceoff dot and BC High grabbed the rebound in the slot and the point-blank chances were denied. With 4:23 to go in the period BC High would finally get one past him. Sophomore forward Max Ryan went hard to the back post and got a pass from senior forward James Greer who was busting down the right side. Ryan collected the puck and snapped it past the sprawling Addazio. The period ended with BC High leading 1-0.

The second period was full of penalties on both sides, with both teams capitalizing on power play goals. MC opened the scoring a few minutes into the period. Senior Erik Utter created a 2-on-1 high in the slot and slid the puck to senior Michael McLaughlin who beat freshman goalie Drew Karlovits high over his left shoulder to tie it up. BC High would answer right back two minutes later as Greer carried the puck wide and threw a shot to the net from the bottom of the circle. Addazio made a right pad save but senior forward Tommy Halloran was there to knock home the rebound, giving BC High the lead once again. They would build on that lead a minute later when MC took a penalty putting the Eagles on the power play. Junior Chris Brennick collected a puck below the goal line to the left of Addazio. He found senior David Williams wide open in the slot who beat Addazio sliding cross crease. MC finished the period on a power play but couldn’t score one of their own and the period ended 3-1.

Both teams started the third off strong, and BC High would go on the power at the 15:35 mark looking to extend their lead. MC had a solid kill and Addazio made some timely saves to keep the game 3-1 and give his team a chance to get back in the game. As time ticked down, a weird goal scored off a couple of deflections would get MC on the board and make it a one-goal game. Freshman Lancers defenseman Jack Tucker fired a shot from the point and it initially deflected off senior Derek DeJon in the slot, then it hit freshman Brody MacMaster who was diving the left side of the net. The deflection off MacMaster would beat Karlovits and cut BC High’s lead to 3-2. MC pulled Addazio to play 6-on-5 for the last couple of minutes and they almost tied the game. MacMaster beat the defenseman and went in alone on Karlovits. He tried to stuff it home short side but Karlovits made the initial save and the rebound squibbed past the outside of the net so the score remained 3-2. Later, BC High senior captain Owen Welch picked up a deflected puck in the neutral zone and fired it into the empty MC net to seal it. BC High took the 4-2 lead and that’s how the game would end.
