NCAA: Former Alaska Commit Will Join Twin Brother at Northern Michigan

Rylan Van Unen (see profile for star rating), the captain of the Merritt Centennials (BCHL) announced on Sunday that he had committed to Northern Michigan. The former Alaska commit (he committed there in Nov. of 2018), Van Unen will join his twin brother, Mike Van Unen, with the Wildcats.

“Rylan knows where the scoring areas are, especially on the power play,” said our scouts. “He camps himself in the crease and slot area in hopes of a redirection. Rylan’s shot has a quick release as he shot upon entry in the first period just to get shut down by the goaltender.”

Mike Van Unen was a freshman this season, recording eight points in 36 games as a defenseman.

Rylan Van Unen has spent the last four seasons with the Centennials. Serving as the team captain this season, Van Unen played 212 regular-season games and 16 playoff games during his tenure with the team, registering 50 goals and 45 assists over that span.

“I am extremely happy for Rylan,” said Merritt head coach Derek Sweet-Coulter. “He has worked hard for this opportunity and I can’t wait to see him succeed at the next level. His work ethic is second to none and he’s a great leader and person. I am proud of him and wish him nothing but success in his new journey.”

Added Van Unen, “I couldn’t be happier to join a program like Northern Michigan, and I’m especially excited to play with my brother again. I’d like to thank everyone in Merritt for what they have done for me in the last four years.”

Mercyhurst was busy on the recruiting trail this week, adding Keanan Stewart yesterday and also picking up Maine Nordiques (NAHL) forward Noah Kane.

Kane, 20, is a Buffalo native who played his first season in the NAHL this season, where he led the Nordiques in scoring with 64 points (20 goals, 44 assists) in 54 games; his 64 points is tied for the league lead.

“When he is attacking in transition,” our scouts said. “Kane likes to take on defensemen. Willing to play in between the dots. Has nice poise on the power play.”

Prior to playing for the Nordiques, Kane — who is Patrick Kane’s cousin — played for the New Jersey Hitmen (NCDC) and the P.A.L. Junior Islanders (NCDC).

“Noah has been a leader on and off the ice all season long and his hard work has shown,” said Maine head coach Nolan Howe. “Noah was our first captain in franchise history and being related to Patrick Kane, hockey is in his blood. Noah has made tremendous progress throughout this season and his leadership and dedication have earned him the ‘C’ and he’s used that all season long to become the player and leader he is today.”
