WHL Latest League to Cancel Regular Season; Hopeful For Playoffs

The Western Hockey League announced on Wednesday afternoon that the league was canceling the remainder of the 2019-20 season; the QMJHL became the first major junior league to cancel its season on Wednesday morning.

The league’s board of governors consulted with medical professionals before making the decision.

“The WHL takes the safety of our players, officials, staff, fans, and everyone associated with the WHL very seriously,” said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “Given the ongoing public health developments regarding COVID-19, we deemed it necessary to cancel the remaining games on the 2019-20 WHL Regular Season Schedule.”

The league said that the final standings would be determined using win percentage and the league was hopeful that it would be able to conduct its playoffs at a later date.

“We will continue to monitor ongoing public health developments regarding COVID-19,” Robison said. “We will make every effort possible to conduct the 2020 WHL Playoffs at a later date. We thank WHL fans and partners for your patience and understanding during these challenging times.”
