Michigan State picked up a commitment out of the NCAA transfer portal this week. The Spartans will add Bemidji State forward Charlie Combs to its roster for next season.
We had Combs as a 3.75-star prospect when he committed to the Beavers. Three years ago, we had Combs ranked No. 31 in North American among ’96-born prospects.
Originally from St. Louis, Combes has 36 goals and 59 total points in three seasons, hitting double-digit goals in each of his three years with Bemidji. In his final year of junior hockey with Wenatchee in 2017, he popped 51 goals in 58 games.
Elsewhere, UConn forward Jordan Timmons is transferring to Robert Morris after two seasons with the Huskies. Timmons had two assists in 36 games over two seasons at UConn. In 2018 he showed some goalscoring ability, scoring 24 goals in the USHL with Cedar Rapids.
Timmons is a 6-foot-2 forward who is moving closer to home; he’s originally from Bridgeville, Penn.
UNH defenseman Nolan McElHaney also entered the transfer portal this week. McElhanney didn’t appear in any games last season as a freshman, missing the entire season while recovering from a knee injury he suffered with Omaha in the USHL during the 2018-19 season. McElhanney had a breakout season with Cushing in 2018.
“He is an offensive defenseman and is constantly looking to activate into the offensive rush,” said NZ scouts at the 2018 Battle of Boston. “He is long and lean and will need to continue to develop strength so that he is tougher to play against in his own zone. He sees the ice well and is at his best with the puck on his stick through the neutral zone. Heavy shot from the point. Sees shooting angles well.”
