NCAA: Omaha, Northeastern Add Grad Transfers While Robert Morris Commits a Forward

2000-born forward Jonny Tychonick is transferring from North Dakota to Nebraska-Omaha, Brad Scholossman of the Grand Forks Herald reported on Tuesday.

We had Tychonick rated as a 5-star prospect entering UND last season. He finished this season with four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 24 games, and he’ll be forced to sit out an NCAA transfer year under current rules. He had four points in 28 games as a freshman.

Meanwhile, Vermont forward Johnny DeRoche announced that he was going to transfer to Northeastern. That’s an interesting move, considering that Northeastern associate head coach Jerry Keefe is considered a candidate for the open head-coaching job at UVM.

“Johnny is an excellent skater but his puck movement and vision is the best part of his game,” said our scouts. “He plays hard in all three zones and has a quick accurate shot.”

In two seasons, DeRoche had two goals and 12 assists at Vermont.

’99 F Matthew Hutton to Robert Morris for 2020

The Indiana native checked in at No. 143 in the NAHL in our 1999 National Rankings report. Hutton has been in the NAHL for the past three seasons, including captaining the Odessa Jackalopes this past season, where he scored 11 goals and added seven assists in 51 games.

’99 F Thad Marcola to Trine for 2020

Marcola has spent the last three seasons with the Northeast Generals, the first two years in the NA3HL and then moving up this season into the NAHL.

“He has good size and was willing to go to the crease,” said NZ scouts. “Gets to good spots without possession Took the goalie eyes away and also showed he could play with pace in space. Good speed and a slick stick. Stays moving and lets the puck do the work. Interesting player and one to watch.”

Marcola had 71 points in 47 games in the NA3HL last season and this year in the NAHL he had six points in 39 games.

’99 F Jonathan Courchesne to Suffolk for 2020

A Vermont native, Courchesne spent this season in the EHL with the Worcester Jr. Railers and the Walpole Express. In total, he scored 16 goals and added 14 assists in 47 games.

“Hardworking forward that can be used in all situations,” our scouts noted. “Effective on the penalty kill and can facilitate the Power Play. Confident with the puck and doesn’t force plays. Good in transition and was a threat through the neutral zone all weekend. Drives wide and has the quickness to beat defenders and get to the net.”

’99 F Tucker Twardosky to New England College for 2020

Twardosky played with Courchesne with the Worcester Jr. Railers this past season. In 45 games, he posted 12 goals and tacked on 18 assists. A native of Merrimack, N.H., before the EHL he played for the Connecticut Nighthawks in the USPHL and the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs.

’99 G Shane O’Brien to Nichols for 2020

O’Brien is a Lynnfield, Mass. native. After a couple of seasons at St. John’s Prep, he played midgets with the North Suburban Wings and then jointed the Boston Jr. Bruins in the USPHL. This season he was in the NA3HL with the Danbury Colonials, where he posted an .895 save percentage and a 3.28 GAA in 26 games.

’99 F Dante Jones to Northland for 2020

Jones was ranked No. 52 in the OJHL in our 1999 National Rankings report. In 48 games this season with the Milton Menace and the Toronto Patriots, Jones scored nine goals and added 14 assists.

“Fluid heads up skater with good speed and athleticism and very adept at carrying the puck through the neutral zone,” our scouts said. “Offensively he is well rounder.  With head up he has the ability to see his linemates and find them with accurate passes. Does not hesitate to shoot the puck as well given a good opportunity.  Good compete level and wins more than his share of battles.”

’99 D Riley Dohner to Southern Maine for 2020

Dohner is a Hummelstown, Pa. native who has spent most of his hockey career in the Philadelphia area. He’s spent the last three seasons with the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers, where he finished this season with 10 points in 32 EHL games.

“Riley is an undersized defenseman who has very good feet and four-way mobility,” said NZ’s scouts. “His vision is very good as he made simple outlets and also hit the stretch ma up ice. His passes were crisp and his defensive stick is quick. Riley kept his feet moving at all times and made plays in stride.”

’99 F Cooper Hoheisel to Gustavus Adolphus for 2020

Hoheisel is the all-time leading scorer for the Minnesota Mullets in the USPHL. This season he finished with 78 points in just 43 games, including 34 goals and 44 assists. Hoheisel also spent some time in the NA3HL and played at Chicago Lake High School in Minnesota.
