LIU Adds Two Hockey East Goalies From Transfer Portal

Long Island University has added two goalies out of the NCAA transfer portal, picking up Vincent Purpura from Boston University and Stephen Mundinger from Maine. Mundinger can likely take advantage of the graduate transfer rule, which would allow him to play for LIU immediately. Purpura is a traditional transfer, which would result in him sitting out next season before becoming eligible in 2021-22.

Mundinger is a 6-foot-8 goalie from Smithtown, N.Y. He joined the Maine roster in 2016 and has appeared in five games over the last three seasons. Prior to joining the Black Bears, Mundinger played for the New York Jr. Aviators in the NA3EHL, posting a .936 save percentage his final season in the league. He also spent time playing junior hockey on Long Island, playing for the PAL Jr. Islanders.

Purpura joined the BU roster in the middle of the 2018-19 season. He appeared in four games that season and in two games this past season. Mundinger is able to transfer under the grad-transfer rule, and he will be able to play immediately. Purpura will have to sit out a transfer year.

“Vinnie is a big goalie, moves well with good active hands out in front of his body,” said NZ scouts. “Butterfly covers low well. Held team in game. Battled hard in the crease. He was excellent stopping grade A opportunities on the PK.”
