College Hockey’s Transfer Portal Begins to Heat Up

College hockey’s transfer portal is already heating up, and the season isn’t even complete.

The biggest name to enter portal thus far is Michigan State goaltender Drew DeRidder, who has been a standout for the Spartans as their primary starter for the last two seasons. In 25 games this season, the former NTDP product posted a .918 save percentage and a 2.94 GAA. DeRidder is a Michigan native (Fenton, Mich.).

Other names include five Brown seniors whose seasons ended over the weekend in the ECAC playoffs.

Forward Justin Jallen is in the portal with one season of eligibility remaining. Jallen had 17 points (10g, 7a) in 29 games this season and has 42 points (27g, 15a) in 93 career games. Jallen is joined by fellow Brown senior forward Tristan Crozier, who had 14 points (5g, 9a) in 25 games this season for the Bears and finished his run at Brown with 39 points (11g, 28a) in 78 career games. Forward Jake Harris finished with 10 points (3g, 7a) this season and is in the portal with 16 points (5g, 11a) in 52 games this season.

Defenseman Dorian Dawson only appeared in one game this season but the Brown senior is in the transfer portal with 64 career games under his belt. Brown senior goaltender Gabriel Vinal is also in the portal. Vinal has three career appearances with a 3.65 GAA and .902 save percentage.

Yale forward Justin Pearson was added to the portal yesterday. The senior had 11 points (3g, 8a) this season and finished his run with the Bulldogs with 52 points (23g, 29a) in 92 games. Yale forward Kyle Johnson also entered the portal; Johnson had three points (2g, 1a) in 30 games this season.

Princeton forwards Finn Evans and Christian O’Neill are also in the transfer portal. Both players are seniors. Evans had 10 points (6g, 4a) this season in 24 games and O’Neill had 12 points (2g, 10a) in 30 games. Evans finished his Princeton career with 17 points (10g, 7a) in 79 games and O’Neill finished with 28 points (8g, 20a) in 83 games. Princeton defenseman Matt Kellenberger (25GP, 4g-2a) is also in the portal.

Holy Cross has a few players in the transfer portal, including Ryan Leibold, who had 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points this season. More impressively, Leibold was +3 on a team that was outscored by 31 goals this season. Forward Anthony Vincent is also in the transfer portal. Vincent had 12 points this past season and has 49 career points.

Vincent and Leibold both should have one year of eligibility remaining. Holy Cross forward Daniel Colabufo is also in the portal; he has 15 career appearances and should have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Holy Cross senior defenseman Matt Slick is also in the portal. Slick had 11 points (4g, 7a) in 37 games this season and has 28 points (9g, 19a) in 121 career games.

Lake Superior State also has a pair of defensemen in the portal, including senior Jacob Nordqvist, who finished with 16 points (5g, 11a) in 35 games this season. Nordqvist has played 137 games in his career and has 61 points (12g, 49a) from the blue line.

The other defenseman is senior Mitchell Oliver, who finished this season with nine points (3g, 6a) in 35 games and has 27 points (6g, 21a) in 97 career games. Nordqvist should have one year of eligibility remaining but I believe Oliver will have two years if he petitions the NCAA because he did not appear in any games as a freshman in 2018-19.

Dartmouth senior forward Erik Eurbank also entered the portal. The Lakeview, N.Y. native had one goal and one assist in 23 games for the Big Green this season and had seven points (1g, 6a) in 53 career games.
