Chicago Tenders Two Top 2006’s Ahead of USHL Draft

The Chicago Steel landed a huge commitment from Ontario forward Michael Hage, signing him to a USHL tender agreement for the 2022-23 season.

“I am very excited to sign with the Chicago Steel,” said Hage. “I look forward to playing and growing within such an amazing organization that has an unparalleled track record of developing players. I can’t wait to get started and work hard to take my game to the next level and contribute to the success of the team. I am very thankful for this amazing opportunity.”

Hage is a 4.5-star recruit from Oakville, Ont. who we have ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect for the OHL Draft. Our Top-300 rankings were just published on April 25.

“A smooth-skating centreman,” said NZ scouts. “He Plays PP/PK and all key situations for the Junior Canadiens. Hage is an intelligent player and he maneuvers himself to gain an advantage, especially without the puck in the offensive zone. He will hover on the perimeter until he sees a play developing, before attacking an open seam to contribute and make a play to the net. When he has the puck he tends to look for outside opportunities to attack or pass, as opposed to driving through traffic. His anticipation skills are elite.

Hage is uncommitted and still has NCAA eligibility. Hage is the second player signed to a tender agreement by the Steel for the 2022-2023 season, joining forward Macklin Celebrini. The Steel are loading up for next season with these additions.

“We’re thrilled to have Michael Hage play for the Steel next year,” said Steel General Manager Mike Garman. “He’s a very talented, dynamic forward who fits our style of play perfectly. We want to thank the Hage family for giving us the opportunity to further Michael’s development both as a player and a person. Michael is passionate about becoming the best player he can be and we’re grateful our values on player development and team success align seamlessly.”

The USHL tender process allows teams to sign up to two 2006 birth year players prior to the 2022 USHL Phase I Draft, which is scheduled to take place in May.

Celebrini, a 15-year-old forward, totaled 117 points (50G, 67A) in 52 games played for the Shattuck St. Mary’s 18U Prep team during the 2021-2022 season.

“Elite player,” NZ scouts said after the MN Elite League this past December. “Macklin is a 2006 birth year but may have been the best player here all weekend. He is a fluid skater and gets up to speed quickly. He has a long stride and body that will be able to fill out as he gets older. He scored at least four goals in our viewings. Received passes and snapped pucks by the goalie, or scored on the line rush after walking a defender. He is around the puck and net and does not take shifts off. He plays tough on the puck and competes in all three zones.”
